Menu Plan Monday: March 22, 2009

Menu Monday

Doctor told me to cut back on carbs and up my protein so no spaghetti this week. I am excited about the chicken lazone, it reminds me of the butter chicken I make all the time. I hope it is as good.

Menu Monday

Had a request for the penne rustica I made on Valentine’s Day, so it is on the menu this week.  It is absolutely delicious.  Friday will be the boys favorite fish dish, Poor Man’s Lobster.  Very easy and tasty!

Love…

Love takes time. It needs a history of giving and receiving, laughing and crying…

Love never promises instant gratification, only ultimate fulfillment.

Love means believing in someone, in something. It supposes a willingness to struggle, to work, to suffer, and to rejoice.

Satisfaction and ultimate fulfillment are by-products of dedicated love. They belong only to those who can reach beyond themselves; to whom giving is more important than receiving.

Love is doing everything you can to help others build whatever dreams they have.

Love involves much careful and active listening. It is doing whatever needs to be done, and saving whatever will promote the other’s happiness, security, and well-being. Sometimes, love hurts.

Love is on a constant journey to what others need. It must be attentive, caring, and open, both to what others say and to what others cannot say…

Love says no with empathy and great compassion.

Love is firm, but when needed it must be tender.

When others have tried and failed, love is the hand in yours in your moments of discouragement and disappointment. Love is reliable.

Love is a choice and commitment to others’ true and lasting happiness. It is dedicated to growth and fulfillment. Love is not selfish.

Love sometimes fails for lack of wisdom or abundance of weakness, but it forgives, knowing the intentions are good.

Love does not attach conditions….Genuine love is always a free gift.

Love realizes and accepts that there will be disagreements and disturbing emotions…There may be times when miles lay between, but love is a commitment. It believes and endures things.

Love encourages freedom of self. Love shares positives and negatives reactions to warm and cold feelings.

Love, intimate love, will never reject others. It is the first to encourage and the last to condemn.

Love is a commitment to growth, happiness, and fulfillment of one another.

Salma Hayek is my Hero!

I am sure that most people have heard about Salma Hayek’s act of charity when she breastfed a week old baby in Africa whose mother had no milk. The net has erupted in an uproar over the video with reactions ranging from elation on the crunchy mom front to disgust by many in the mainstream blogging world.

In my opinion, Salma did what any compassionate woman would do. How could a mother who hears a baby cry from hunger not want to feed it. I haven’t breastfed in three years and my breasts still ache when I hear a hungry baby cry. It is a physical reaction. I just can’t imagine having milk and turning my back on a hungry baby.

I truly don’t understand the aversion. I know that wet-nursing has a lot of historic class ramifications associated with it. I understand that back in the day poor women became the milk cow for wealthy mother’s who did not want to be tied down by an infant. I can understand why as a society we would not want that to happen again. But what I don’t get is why there is such a gross-out factor for so many people. How is breastfeeding another woman’s baby at your breast different than donating your milk? As long as you are healthy and disease free, I seriously don’t understand why anyone would think it is “gross.”

Salma has done a service for us all in my opinion. She brought awareness of breastfeeding to Africa and showed one of the most admirable traits a person can possess, compassion. Thanks Salma from me and all the breastfeeding mom’s I know! You are a hero!

Why I Blog

I have only been blogging since June of 2008. I am sure most people know what a blog is, but for those of you who are newbies to this blogging thing, according to Wikipedia, “a blog (a contraction of the term “Web log“) is a web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.”  Blogs are becoming more & more popular because they are so easy to do for even the basic user.

People blog for many different reasons and there are many different kinds of blogs. Personal blogs, corporate blogs, question bogs, video blogs, photo blogs, political blogs, travel blogs, & niche blogs are just some of the types of blogs you will find in the blogosphere.

So why do I blog?

  • I blog to share my thoughts. As a SAHM sometimes I lack a person to talk and debate with, but online I have an unlimited number of adults to converse with on any subject I choose.
  • I blog to share information I find with my friends.  I like to be helpful and having a place to show off the neat things I find on the net.
  • I blog to stay in touch with friends and family that live far away.
  • I blog to increase my knowledge. After all, if I am going to blog about a subject I want to make sure I get the facts right.
  • I blog to make connections.  Blogging is a great way to meet people from all over the world.
  • I blog to stay organized.
  • Lastly, I blog because it is fun.  If I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t do it.

So in essence, blogging gives me the opportunity to think.  Sometimes I get so busy I don’t get the chance to contemplate what is going on in the world.  Blogging gives me that chance.

Here’s one more…

We were notified that in addition to HB190, that Senator Ray Jones of Eastern KY has filed SB54 on behalf of autism insurance. This is GREAT news! Having the same bill pushed through both chambers, especially when this is only a 30 day session (vs. a 60 day session in even numbered years), this may be the extra help we need!!!

If you live in Kentucky, please start calling your senators and ask to have SB54 heard. It’s filed and assigned to the SENATE BANKING and INSURANCE committee.

Soon the amended SB54 will be endorsed by Autism Speaks and they’ll be updating their KY page to include both bills. Currently only HB190 has been endorsed by Autism Speaks.

Please call 1-800-372-7181 (message line), and leave a message asking Senator Tom Buford to “hear and support” SB54 — he’s the Chair of the Senate Banking and Insurance committee.

It literally takes just a minute or two!!!

Thanks again!

Kentucky Autism Insurance Reform Bill

There is a bill in the Kentucky legislature right now that would require insurance companies to cover ABA therapy for individuals with autism. This would make a huge difference for so many families, and most importantly for their children.

The KY autism insurance reform bill, HB190, mandating that private insurers in KY pay for treatments and therapies for children with autism including ABA, has been introduced into the House of Representatives Banking and Insurance Committee. It is important that our legislators hear from us on this bill.

Please call the Legislative Message Line to ask for a hearing of HB190 (the bill will die if he does not hear it). It is very important that we all make this simple call - ask your family, teachers, therapists and friends to take a minute to call. Thank you!

Please call the Legislative Message Line at 1-800-372-7181 and ask Rep. Jeff Greer (the committee chair) to hear, as well as support, HB190.

T-Shirts Galore!

My wardrode consists of jeans and a t-shirt most days. I am tired of the plain tees I wear most of the time, so I went searching for some more exciting alternatives. Here are just a few of the ones I am coveting.

Share links to some of your favorite tees in the comments.  I can’t wait to see them.
