Al Gore Endorses Barack Obama

Former Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Al Gore just endorsed Barack Obama tonight.  Now, I have to tell you I am an Al Gore junkie.  There is a part of me that still wishes he would be our next president (of course it would be even better if he were our current president).

Here is the letter he sent out to supporters earlier today.

Dear Friend,

Make a donationA few hours from now I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama. From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States.

Over the next four years, we are going to face many difficult challenges — including bringing our troops home from Iraq, fixing our economy, and solving the climate crisis. Barack Obama is clearly the candidate best able to solve these problems and bring change to America.

This moment and this election are too important to let pass without taking action…

Over the past 18 months, Barack Obama has united a movement. He knows change does not come from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue or Capitol Hill. It begins when people stand up and take action.

With the help of millions of supporters like you, Barack Obama will bring the change we so desperately need in order to solve our country’s most pressing problems…

On the issues that matter most, Barack Obama is clearly the right choice to lead our nation…

Thank you for joining me,

Al Gore

So at 8:30pm I sat and watched the rally in Detroit by live feed.  Gore and Obama did not disappoint.  They were both eloquent and inspiring.

I do want to get on my soapbox for a moment.  While Michigan’s governor was speaking the audience booed when she mentioned Hilary Clinton.  I do not understand why they did that.  After all, Obama has won the nomination.  How does upsetting Clinton supporters help Obama and the Democratic party?  We have to remember that there is something more important than the fight between Clinton and Obama.  A fight is coming that we have not yet won.  Don’t get me wrong, we will win the fight!  But we must unite, we must unify and to do that we can not alienate any part of the Democratic party, especially not a part that is as large as the Clinton supporters.  Good for Obama for coming out and praising her tonight.

This election will not only affect the future of our country, it will affect the future of our planet.  The Democratic party presented us with a field of candidates that were the strongest we have ever seen.  We have been privileged to be able to choose between a group of men and women that are so capable of leading this country.  I am so proud of my party.  We are strong, vibrant, and ready to take Obama all the way to the White House.

As Al Gore said tonight, “Take it from me, elections matter.”

Oh, how right he is.  We need to change our policies and Obama is the change I am standing behind.  I implore you to get out and register to vote.  Everyone has a voice, you must use yours.

Okay, stepping off my soapbox for now.  I look forward to seeing you at the polls in November.
